Issue Briefs Current State and Challenges: Precision Medicine in South Korea 정밀의료 기술의 현황과 도전: 한국 사례를 중심으로

Author Young Seok Ju / Professor, Graduate School of Medical Science and Engineering, KAIST

Date 2018-09-18

Precision medicine promises to cover rare diseases that are currently out of economic feasibility of medical service and attracts a huge amount of investment across countries. However, the approach of precision medicine inevitably contains the ethical, regulatory and intitutional issues in harnessing artificial intelligence to analyze genomic and healthcare big data and sharing the data across organizations over national borders. The brief suggests political leaders should preemptively address those issues of precision medicine that emerge in sharing and analyzing sensitive human data, e.g., standardization, justice benefit sharing and privacy. The brief was shared with global leaders who participated in the Asia Session at the Summer Davos of the World Economic Forum (Beijing, China, 18 - 20 September 2018), and led to ethical and political research of KPC4IR and the research collaboration between KAIST and Seoul National University Hospital.
